I-O Data Device and Buffalo, the two largest Japanese distributors, together holding 70% of Japan’s IT channel market, have made the unusual move this past week of arriving on Taiwan’s doorstep to purchase DRAM chips and modules. They plan to finish the packaging in Japan.

According to Taiwan's DRAM module makers, Japanese distributors have gone in search of DRAM outside its borders due to cost and supply considerations. Although Japan%u2019s current economy seems passable on the surface, it is in fact laden with losses, with DRAM makers either already squeezed out of the market or unable to deliver sufficient supply. These Japanese distributors have been driven to Taiwan for low-priced DRAM to offer Japanese consumers low-priced PCs.
