Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed';
the X server's font paths might be misconfigured, remote font server(s)
may be unreachable, and/or local fonts may not be installed or are not
configured correctly.

People inexperienced with the X Window System should have either the
"x-window-system" or "x-window-system-core" packages installed.
# apt-get install x-window-system-core
# apt-get install x-window-system

$ dpkg --status xserver-common
$ dpkg --status xfonts-base
$ zmore /usr/share/doc/x11-common/FAQ.gz

Hello
debian can be loaded on a 915 motherboard.here how
1) install debian the usual way on hard disk.
2) go in to SU mode
3) at root console type
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
4) you will get a number of questions, most of which are default and you just
have to press enter ..... and so on.
5) on the screen question to load drivers --- choose VESA from the scroll menu
and press enter.
6) reboot.

I personally choose XORG server for my debian installation instead of xree86. I
found it better than xfree86. TRY IT
After installing debian, i modified mu apt-get sources to
deb //people.debian.org/~nobse/xorg-x11/">http://people.debian.org/~nobse/xorg-x11 sarge main
if anything goes wrong, you can retype at root console:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
upon installation you will have to answer the similar questions as above( BUT
LESS IN NUMBER and much simpler ones)

regards
nelson

I too was having a problem in getting my Debian Sarge working with Intel (original) 915 GVWD motherboard. Thanks for your tips. We struggled a bit. Then my techie (who wants to remain unnamed) hit on this solution. He just used Bio-Knoppix with options "knoppix vga=normal xserver=XFree86 xmodule=vesa screen=800x600 2"

This was for a screen resolution of 800 x 600. It opened in terminal mode, and then the command "cp /etc/X11/XF86Config* /mnt/hda1/etc/X11/"

Original Sarge file was overwritten, and everything worked fine!

Update:
xserver-xfree86 is still not working.

I almost have MRTG configured the way I want... now I'm banging away at mysql-server4.1 which is not configuring right.
