Gear Live | HOW TO: Back Up And Upgrade The Mac mini Hard Drive
pointers on doing your own drive upgrade... although i would think the Hitachi Travelstar E7K60 60GB ATA-6 2.5in 7200RPM Mobile Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer a better performance boost.

The mini had half a gig of RAM in it, but the 4200-RPM drive was just holding me back. It was time to upgrade to a 5400 RPM 100 GB drive. Rather than taking it in to a service center where they would overcharge me, I did it on my own. If you want to upgrade your Mac mini’s hard drive, read on for our tutorial which takes a look at backing up your data, replacing your hard drive, and restoring your data.

ibooks use 2.5 inch 9.5mm harddrives with a rotational speed of 4200 rpms. People have put 120 gig drives in them they all work fine. Problem happen when you put fast harddrives in an ibook higher rpm = more heat = logicboard issues = apple won't fix them with fast rpm speed drives.

I was thinking about getting the Hitachi for my iBook until I read a very stern warning: There is absolutely no room inside the iBook for anything bigger than the currently installed drive. I forget the size in millimeters, but the two drives (original and Hitachi) were off by about 0.5. I didn't think any other drive on the market right now was worth the work, so I backed away from the project.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mini has the same size constrictions. Maybe the guy knew beforehand or maybe he was just lucky. But be wary of the little apples!
