DDR MEMORY is still going strong
DDR memory offers lots of hard choices
Quick summary of current DDR choices. I haven't bought memory since last summer so I'm checking into it again. Histroically it has been much more expensive per megabyte. All the reviews I read on OS X say that it uses everything you have. Whereas I have personally put 256MB in a Windows 2000 box and run ok, then when I put in 512MB it was a lot better. when I upped that to 1GB there was no noticeable performance increase at the OS level. Memory hungry apps like Photodraw and Photoshop can benefit, but I saw no benefit for a regualr user to put 1GB in a desktop running Windows. Also remember the Mac Mini uses PC2700 (333MHz) DDR SDRAM so if you're maxing out one of those make sure you put good memory in.
DDR2 is finally entering the volume stage, and the performance penalties from ridiculously high latencies have been partly dealt with (DDR2-533 at 3-3-3-8 can be found, with some parts even going to 3-2-2-7 or so).
