Nokia 6600 and Hotspots: Like a 3650 on crack with a business suit.
Matt mentioned T-Mobile US Finally Has the 6600 I asked Matt a few questions about the different plans, here's what he said:
There are two $19 internet plans with t-mobile. One is the unlimited GPRS, which allows you to connect via GPRS either on your phone or via a bluetooth dongle to your laptop. The 3650 for some reason gives me fairly slow upload/download over GPRS, definitely less than GPRS should be capable of. It's about par with a 56k modem, but sometimes less, rarely more. For that you should consider the $9.99 t-zones plan. That only allows you to access a few ports (80/443/25 work for sure). For example, you can surf and send email, but not SSH. That seems to be the only difference between the $10/$20 plan. They also have a VPN plan for $19.95 that gives you a world-routable IP addy and works with most VPNs.The other plan is their $19.99 hotspot plan. That's different than the GPRS
plan, and gives you unlimited access at starbucks and borders stores, etc. They
don't make this well known, but they also have a pay as you go plan which is
$6.00 for the first hour and $.10/min after that. That's the plan that I use,
cause I sometimes go a month or two without hotspot need, but when I need it, I
want access to it. Outside United red carpet clubs at the airport is a good way
to stay in touch while waiting for your plane. It works well when I'm on the
road, because with few exceptions, if you can find a Starbucks, you've got net.
I was reading the t-mobile site and they didn't say anything about bluetooth so I wasn't sure if the 6600 had it, Matt had this to say:
Yeah, it's got BT. http://www.nokia.com/phones/6600 should have all the details. It's like a 3650 on crack with a business suit on. It has more memory, faster proc (I think), a newer version of the Symbian OS (7.0s vs. 6.0) and has MIDP 2.0 + a few extensions on the Java side. Nokia has a Python port (and possibly a Perl port, but I've not been able to confirm this inside Nokia) that is making limited rounds. There's also OPL for scripting, and really ugly C++ for native apps. The 6600 is really nice, should give quicker GPRS access over BT, etc.
Thanks for the details Matt! Now I just have to decide if I wait for an incentive on the 6600 or not...
