Centibots Project Home Page

At the recent GNU/LinuxWorld conference in San Francisco, Menlo Park-based SRI International showed off its "Centibots" -- tiny robots that work together on tasks, such as mapping a series of rooms or searching out a designated object, such as a bomb.

The robots use GNU/Linux and Santa Clara-based Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Jini technology.

The Centibots are a team of 100 autonomous robots (80 ActivMedia Amigobot and 20 ActivMedia Pioneer 2 AT). The goal of the project is to demonstrate by December 2004, 100 robots mapping, tracking, guarding in a coherent fashion during a period of 24 hours.
