Virtual Desktops For Windows XP/2000
Virtual Dimension
I tried this out, it works on Windows 2000 Professional. So far stable. There is a slight lag in clicking one of the four virtual desktops I created that were populated with 3-7 application windows. I counted and this was approximately 2 seconds...If you can live with the lag it seems like a useful way to dived your work space up.
Welcome to Virtual Dimension: a free, fast, and feature-full virtual desktop manager for Windows platform. The main goal of this open-source project is indeed to enhance the Microsoft "Window Manager" up to the level of usual Unix Window Manager, by providing virtual desktops, as well as some additional features, like always on top, window shading...

This is a great little program for w2k_pro, downloads quick, and installs without a hickup. My only problem is getting my 2 vd's to have different wallpapers.
cheers/lance
WOW !!! work flawlessly, very usefull (i really like dragging application from a desk to another)
that was a thing i really missed from my unix days... thanks a lot !
I´m a regular Linux user and I´ve found this tool really cool, stable and usable; much better than others I´ve tried so far, and it´s free (GPL :-)
I´m using v0.94 and I haven´t noticed the switching delay others talk about.
Thanks!
Nice little super lightweight desktop switcher. Works great in win2k or winxp. Very stable and fast.

Solves the multiple desktop problem fairly well. And yeah, the delay between switching is a little annoying.
Thanks for creating this useful tool and ask me if you need any help to improve or translate it (in French) :)
Cheers
I've also found the XP Power Toys desktop switcher to be pretty buggy. I'd wanted it since I'd shelled out so much money for XP, and kinda wanted XP to be just like any other decent desktop app (like Gnome or KDE on Linux), and desktop switching is so useful, it's hard to imagine actually paying money for a desktop without it. Too bad, really -- I have to use XP every once in a while, mainly to test software on ie since that's such a buggy browser and needs special testing -- I guess I'll just have to deal with the bugs, or else not having my work nicely separated.
XP really rocks as an OS compared to previous Microsoft products, it's pretty stable, and easier for the average user to get everything he wants on install. But once you get used to desktop switching, you really don't want to go back to XP.
Some hints for the Power Toys desktop switcher: it doesn't work well with wallpaper. If you have wallpaper bugs, right click desktop, properties, go to the wallpaper selection place, click 'browse,' and delete the files there that look like temporary files. This will iron out one bug.
ok, i have already replaced this with the powertoys version. though that doesn't work exactly the same it's nearly the same and (*gasp*) even though it's microsoft, much more stable.
in the one afternoon and the following morning that I used VD! I've have it crash on me twice, stuck in a loop of switching between two desktops.
not useful enough for me. time to switch to linux.
this is pretty cool actually, I've immediately downloaded this and am now running it here at work. finally a way of having one's editor on a different desktop as well as the shell and mail.
