SMART Disk Monitoring in Debian Linux

Jeremy Zawodny's blog: SMART Disk Monitoring in Debian GNU/Linux

Jeremy continues an investigation into why his colocated box died after a couple of months online. He talks about SMART monitoring with automatic logging. I'm curious as to what went wrong. I understand the drives were Maxtor. Which would surprise me if they were the culprit, I've had such good luck with Maxtor IDE drives...

As noted in Disk Goes Boom, one of my colocated machines had a nasty disk failure. The disks arrived today. I hope to figure out how bad the damage is, replace the bad disk, and ship them back to get installed.

You might want to have a look at an updated version of the smartsuite package called smartmontools. You can find it at
http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/
Debian versions of the package are available, as well as Redhat, SuSE, and Madrake versions.
