DivX 5.3 is out :: for Win32
From Binary hacked codec to complete rewrite, this little project makes good.
The latest version is Win32, the GNU/Linux and Mac versions are still at 5.01 and 5.0a3 alpha still.
They have a Divx Certification Program and DVD Player supporting Divx !
This slashdot comment points out that the DreamCast port DCDivX has been out since June 2002. I have one around here somewhere.
I'd say that this looks nice, but Divx has pointed all downloads to their site, making it a single point of failure! I could not get at the Divx Codec I needed to play back a technical video someone gave me of some machinery this week.
The hardware support is a big turning point for Divx, and it looks like it is well on the way to becoming a defacto standard. for compressed video. A major chink in DVD's penetration was the ommission of CD-ROM source playback for videos in the early days, which eliminated small format and shorts from cheap distribution.
So I'll tell you that if you too are blocked from the Divx site by over zealous firewall software to take a look at the bottom of this post.
Version History of DivX 5.x (Windows)
Support for DivX Certified Profiles. With the new DivX Certification program, DivXNetworks is enabling third parties to create "DivX Certified" products that are rigorously tested and fully compatible with the entire suite of DivX® video technologies. There are four levels of official DivX Certified video products: Handheld Video Devices, Portable Video Devices, Home Theater Video Devices and High Definition Video Devices. These levels quickly and clearly communicate what type and size of DivX video are supported on the certified device. Now, when you encode video, you have the option to force your video to comply with one of the DivX Certified Profiles to ensure that your video will play back properly on certified products.
DP-450: First Player for DivX Video in Hi-Fi Format
It took almost three years for the arrival of a standalone player that could show videos and movies in DivX (MPEG-4) format. Based on the REALmagic EM8500 chip, which essentially handles the MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 decoding functions, the KiSS DP-450 is the first player in the world that fits into this category. This means that along with well-known media like DVD video, S-video CD and video CD, movies with DivX coding (MPEG-4) can be shown, too. However, there are several restrictions that should not matter much for most users. The integrated chip from REALmagic only shows videos that have been compressed with a version 4.02 codec and above. Earlier versions (3.x and below) cannot be used.
