I did it :: set up virtual linux :: JohnCompanies - Collocation Services
I setup a John Companies GNU/Linux Server last night.
I entered my credit card info, around 10 PM and just read the confirmation email they sent at 12:45 am with IP address etc. I also registered a domain name last night with pairnic.com, I like pair.com (you're reading this on a pair.com account) they just don't have root access on shared, or dedicated servers (yet) that is flexible like John Companies.
John Companies' also provides DNS services. So I jumped on that first thing to get the domain name setup.
Looks like fun. I am still looking into colocation, I set up this account for dev purposes. If I like the performance, I may just use this setup instead...
I'll put more comments here when I find out more. They promise unbelievable tech support.
Half that and I'll be happy.
My biggest concern is reliability, followed by security.

I don't have any disagreement.
I found many nice articles in here. Please post more before my next visit again.
A nice blog.
They have sent me emails to let me know about scheduled outages due to upgrades and just yesterday an alert describing how to upgrade Sendmail after the vulnerability was discovered. The info covered Debian/Redhat/BSD with step by step instructions.
When I originally configured this account I used it to test Interchange an ecommerce package. I initially had trouble getting it to work, and based on email consultation decided that using the Apache RPM's weren't working. I downloaded the source code and after installing from source I was up and running within an hour. Why I couldn't get the CGI app in this case Interchange to work from the default install I'm not sure... I spent too much time banging my head against the default install. So I would say that based on my expectations, in this instance their response was resonably prompt. I think the first email was replied to with in 6 hours, and the follow up question was resolved in under 2. I think I get approximately the value of the monthly fee. I have stuck a number of larger files on this server to spread out my bandwidth utilization.
I'm a sysadmin 24 hours by desire, and so I look at everything as an interesting challenge. In most cases I'll put in extra time to figure out a solution on my own before asking for the answer. My understanding is that a certain amount of support includes hands on assistance from johnscompanies, I may be mistaken on this please refer to the agreement, in any case the only thing I asked johncompanies to do was configure DNS records for this server.
I would consider johncompanies for colocation of my own hardware, but this is something I'm not clear on; do they suppport just a 1U at the $100 a month or if they support for instance a tower configuration or more likely if they do, a larger 4U or 5U rackmounted server.
My current plans for this account this year include increased support of large files on this server, and a test installation of either sourceforge from gnu, or the gforge3 fork.
I have never had anything mission critical on this server, and use it for development purposes. I have seen comments from other people that decried the lack of response from johncompanies on a server that went down, (most likely my server as I did receive alerts that it was out) I can only say that for my purposes, the support has been adequate, and that outages have not effected my use of this system for design and development purposes...
To wrap up, I will continue to maintain this account for the forseeable future, and have considered a upgrade to a fully colocated box that I would build and send out there.
Hope this helps.
I set up my johncompanies linux account awhile ago. Since you've been with them since last year, any feedback so far on their service?
regards :)
