I'm buying an Asus A7N266-VM
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.--Motherboard - A7N266-VM
I had an Epox micro atx mobo fail, haven't done a post mortem on it yet, but sort of suspect it might be a heat issue. This board is a drop in replacement except for the fact I'll be changing from SDRAM to DDR-DRAM...While I'm at it I'll bump up to an AMD XP processor from the duron that was in the original.
The included AGP slot is very nice, the Epox did not have that feature.
The duron served it's purpose but the way I look at it, my time is worth more then the cost to buy the new proc' and while I'm in there might as well upgrade.
Oh and I'll drop a few case fans in while I'm at it.
Updates to follow.
The A7N266-VM is the first micro-ATX motherboard to offer complete integrated features without sacrificing performance. Built upon the advanced nForce chipset architecture, the A7N266-VM features powerful GeForce2 level 3D graphics, optional axudio and LAN for an all-in-one solution with unmatched performance and value.

Hi
Can somebody tell me, where can I find sound and graphic drivers (windows XP) for my motherboard. I have ASUS A7N266-VM.
Processor: AMD Athlon xp 2200+
Hi
Can somebody tell me, where can I find sound and graphic drivers (windows XP) for my motherboard. I have ASUS A7N266-VM.
Has anybody tried to install a Sempron 2200 (166MHz Clok, 9 Multi, 1.5Ghz Frequ.) on the ASUS A7N266-VM? The board does not support 166 FSB but I understand with the modding mentioned elsewhere in the forum I can free up the FSB and than select 166Mhz. The Bios should not recognize the CPU or maybe it might think it's an Athlon XP+ 1500. Who knows?
Any clue?
thanks

hi,
i got a new amd sempron 2600+ pc with asus a7v400mx motherboard, with 80gb hdd, 256 ddr ram.
my system runs well only with win98.
it hangs us either during installation or during normal operation with winxp, win2000, linux(redhat,fedora..)
please give me a solution
seating memory dimms can be tricky sometimes. verify that there was a positive click on each side when you seated the dimm. also try using http://www.memtest86.com/ to test the memory.
does the bios come up?
if the memory is not seated correctly you could have a failure to post! remove the dimm. reseat and verify all cables are securely seated to the motherboard and case.
the board should POST without a memory dimm. as a last resort try removing the memory and powering on.
if in any case it still will not POST I'm afraid you blew something out.
I would recommend you check the cables and seating of the dimm though first before assuming that.

error 28:The selected item is not fit into memory
Pls give me a solution.
I have the Asus A7n266-VM motherboard too. I have successfully installed both windows XP Pro and Redhat 8.0 with GUI. It wasnt easy but it can be done. When installing redhat you have to unplug the rear USB card (the one not on the motherboard) for some reason it just plain wont work with linux. You have to install Linux in run level3 (text mode) then install all the drivers and edit the x86fconfig file. But just incase some of you were having doughts, i just wanted to let you guys knwo it CAN be done and when its done the board performs nicely in GUI mode, and the 3D and openGL look very sweet.
I'm new to this party but hopefully can get some help.
I have a ASUS A7N266VM motherboard and AMD 1800+ processor.Works superbly with windows XP, but as you said,I cant load RedHatLinux8.0 in graphical mode.It installed in text mode but the GRUB boot loader gives "error 28:the selected item can not fit into memory".As such the monitor goes undetected during installation(Samsung Samtron 56v).Iam trying to install RHL 9,it takes graphical mode during installation. But the problem is same.
Pls inform me how can I install.

I have a question what does it mean when the multiport dynamic resolution is off
Sir
I am having AMD Athlon xp 2000+ processor with Asus A7N266-VM/SE mother board, 128MB DDR SDRAM nVDIA chipset. My problems are - Windows XP takes more time to start. - 3D games are working very slowly. It takes more time to close the run programs. Kindly suggest how to rectify the problems. Where is the fault.
Thank you.
Kannan,S.
for RHL install in text mode, install lilo as the boot loader ans skip X configuration. then dl the drivers from nvidia site. get the NVIDIA-nForce*.run file it is easiest to install. also get the latest version of grub (.93) install te drivers do an xf86config and select geforce2 as the display. configure your monitors for lower frequencies than it supports. after it generates the /etc/X11/XF86config file, edit this file and cahnge the line driver "nv" to driver "nvidia" ten reboot and startx.
i am using Asus A7n266 mother board and did not find graphics and sound drivers for windows NT with the accompanying mother board CD. kind guide me where to find these stuff

I have this motherboard and I've had no problems running Win2K and RedHat Linux 8.0
Yes the GRUB bootloader fails - although you will find a solution if you type the error msg into google.
If you're a linux newbie, use the LILO bootloader to begin with. Install redhat in text mode and then download the graphics drivers from nvidia.com.
Nice motherboard, lots of features, no problems
I also had GUI problems installing RedHat 8.0 my new ASUS A7N266-VM motherboard. However RedHat 9.0 works fine. Now I am having problems getting the networking configured.

THANKS..
I have a Asus A7N266-E Motherboard PC Based system and have a flaw with the GRUB boot loader. I have tried installing on a empty harddrive, with Win2k and it cant boot from hd only floppy and cdrom. The message "Selected item cannot fit into memory" appears when trying to boot from HD. As I tried the kernel on the floppy - it still gave me the same error.
Any ideas?
For linux to work on this board you MUST use Lilo, not Grub (SuSE 8.1 uses Grub by default.)
I have been running SuSE 8.1 on this board for a while, and it runs flawlessly.
I can't even install Win2K, though...... :-|
Error 28 : Selected Item cannot fit into memory discusses this error.
Also the startx crashing error.
The boot error seems to be related to Grub, are you using this as your boot loader?
Does Lilo or a boot floppy work?
The system I built was for someone else, they needed to run Windows 2000, which is what was loaded on it.
Also mentioned was using switchdesk from the console to change the window manager. Something about Gnome having a bug. In one case WindowMaker was recommended.
Hi -
I read your article - I've built an Asus A7n266-VM system, and tried to install SuSE 8.1 on it. After installation on first boot it fails with the message
kernel (hd0,0) vmlinuz root = /dev/sda3 vga = 788 [ linux-bzImage, setup = 0x1400, size = 0x10aab8 ]
Error 28 : Selected item cannot fit into memory.
The system runs fine with Win98.
What OS are you running ? Did you have any problems if it was Linux?
Thanks in anticipation

More updates...The Epox is alive and well. The monitor went bad! It's OK the nforce Asus is super so I don't feel bad about it.
I swapped the bad monitor out for a SyncMaster 755DF from Samsung which was the best monitor I've seen for $159 shipped.
OK the Epox POSTed in another case, I did clear the CMOS with the onboard jumper so I'm still not certain what happened.
I want to load a new OS this week, not sure if I'll get to it. I have Debian disks I want to try out.
Installed the motherboard this weekend.
The only components from the old system was the case, power supply and hard drive.
Because of the difference in the chipsets, it was not a drop in replacement. Via vs Nvidia.
I installed the Athlon XP 1600+ and 512+256MB of DDR Dram.
With the onboard video using 32 MB as currently configured.
Performance in UT 2003 demo was very playable at 640x480 16 bit, and acceptable in 800x600 32 bit.
Actually thinking about it now, bumping the shared memory for video up to 64 MB would help a bit. And of course the free AGP slot is just icing on the cake for when I add a new card in 4-6 months. One of the reasons I selected this board was the AGP slot. Nvidia chipset and that I have had success in the past with mATX form factor all in one mother boards.
The post mortem is not complete, too busy today, but I have a bad feeling it may very well have been a bad keyboard! Once I got the new system up and running the keyboard stopped working on a subsequent reboot. A spare swapped in has been going fine.
What I'll try is booting the old Epox up in another case.
Checking the BIOS, (If I can get it to POST) I have an inkling that the stop on error function will be active, no keyboard in many cases will raise an error flag.
arggh. Anyway, I'll update this thread with what I find...
