Some years ago, landscapers ceased bothering to come up with their own walkways between the buildings of a new college campus and just let the grass grow for a year instead. When they came back, they looked for the places where the grass had been trodden down and paved them over. The same technique would be advantageous for web sites, too, but they can't be built this way, yet, because someone needs to put a formal pathway in there for anyone to reach a web page in the first place. The only paths that can be reinforced are ones that were already put there by the builders.
